Donating your pumpkins for a good cause
AUBURN, Ky. -With Halloween now behind us, many are throwing out their pumpkins and getting ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas. But before you toss that jack-o’-lantern, consider donating it.
Lily’s Ranch and Rescue in Auburn is accepting pumpkin donations for their animals. The organization specializes in rescuing animals from difficult situations, and donated pumpkins help both the caretakers and the animals they help.
“Pumpkins offer excellent nutrition for the pigs, the cows, honestly anything here but the horses. The horses really don’t care for them. They will eat them. They’re actually so nutritious for them. And it’s fun watching them eat them because they just have a grand old time eating the pumpkins. And it’s it helps us with our food bill,” said President of Lily’s Ranch and Rescue Laurie Beattie.
That food bill can skyrocket as they take in more animals. Lily’s Ranch and Rescue currently has about 170 animals and has taken in 35 more just this year. Food costs alone can reach hundreds of dollars a week, and when you include hay, it hits over $2,000 weekly.
You can also visit anytime of the year, whether it’s bringing your children or just learning more about what they have to offer.
