Report of ‘home incarceration’ scam in Warren County

WARREN COUNTY, Ky. – The Warren County Sheriff’s Office is warning the community of a new scam.

Deputies say mugshots are being posted to social media pages, and scammers are now preying on family members of those who have been incarcerated.

Authorities say a family member of someone who had turned themselves in was contacted and told that “due to overcrowding in the jail, the individual was eligible for home incarceration.”

The sheriff’s office says the scammer then asks for payment for the program. This could include requests for $1,500, $2,000 or $3,000 depending on which “prototype” the family wanted.

It can quickly turn to them requesting cryptocurrency, Apple Pay, Venmo or PayPal.

Local law enforcement confirms this is a scam.
