UPDATE: Man flees police, later captured on riverbank

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – One man is facing charges after police say he fled an attempted traffic stop on Tuesday.

According to Bowling Green Police Department public information officer Ronnie Ward, officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on 50-year-old Elmo Stewart of Bowling Green, however, he failed to stop.

Ward says officers disengaged during this time. Later, police say Stewart’s vehicle was found unoccupied on Riverview Drive.

A uniform citation states officers were aware the vehicle involved was stolen and that Stewart had fled from another county.

Authorities say officers searched the area and heard a distress call in the bank of the river.

After contacting the Bowling Green Fire Department for assistance from its rope team, Ward says they launched a boat into the river.

Stewart was located and removed from the riverbank, according to Ward. He was placed into custody and transported to a hospital for treatment of a heat-related illness.

Stewart is charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree fleeing or evading police (motor vehicle), reckless driving, second-degree disorderly conduct, receiving stolen property between $1,000 and $10,000, first-degree criminal mischief, resisting arrest and disregarding a traffic control device – traffic light.
