Warren County Volunteer Fire experiencing shortage

WARREN COUNTY, Ky. – Firefighters have one of the most difficult and dangerous jobs.

Here in Warren County, there are currently nine departments and 22 stations that make up the fire protection. These are solely run by volunteers.

Outside of serving, most of these men and women work full-time jobs. Others are retired military.

Kelley Willford, captain of Plano Fire, believed she “still had something to give” after her 20 year career in the U.S. Air Force. She was quick to join the day of her interview five years ago. Willford says she’s “loved it ever since.”

There are currently a little over 200 volunteers. However, as Bowling Green and Warren County continue to grow, there is becoming a need for ore volunteer firefighters.

Departments are working together to solve common problems.

Sam Lock, chairperson of the Warren County Recruitment and Retention, says fire departments are “problem solvers” in the area. He believes firefighters are “here for one goal”: “working to serve our community in whatever way we can.”

Ages 16 and up can apply.
