DEA disposes of unused medications on National Prescription Drug Take Back Day
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The United States Drug Enforcement Administration has reported that nearly 4,500 law enforcement agencies joined forces last month to dispose of more than 620,000 pounds of unneeded and expired medications.
It’s in an effort to prevent drug misuse and abuse.
The spring collection event marked the DEA’s 28th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
Across the Louisville division, which covers Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia, nearly 40,000 pounds of medications were collected at sites located across the three-state region.
Tennessee collected the most, with 26,537 pounds, followed by Kentucky, with 8,904 pounds and West Virginia, with 4,097 pounds.
Locally, multiple law enforcement agencies participated to help gather prescriptions, including the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, the Kentucky State Police and the Bowling Green Police Department.
