Protecting you and your family from online dangers
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – As technology advances, the needs for security advances with it.
News 40 sat down with a cyber security expert to discuss the best ways to protect yourself when browsing the internet and posting on social media.
Michael Lemon, the founder of Cyber Safe School and Cyber Safe Families, says that what you post on social media is out there for everyone to see, but there are steps you can take to protect yourself, like setting your posts so only friends can see them and only adding friends online that you know personally and can trust.
Finally, he says parents have to take a proactive approach when it comes to their children who may be online.
Preparing your child for what or who they might come into contact with while online is incredibly important, because if they are unprepared, it could result in a horrible outcome.
“There’s very few things in the world you can say I’m 100% certain of, but I’m 100% certain your child’s going to meet a predator at some point. Multiple predators, most likely through their lifetime. And if they’re not prepared for that, they’re just going into like I explained it before, you know, like sending my kid to fight Mike Tyson. You know, it’s, it’s unfair,” Lemon said.
Lemon says these conversations can be difficult, but if your child does find themselves in trouble to immediately block the user and cut off all contact. And if anything illegal may be taking place to immediately contact your local law enforcement.
