Man apprehended after stolen police cruiser pursuit ends in Daviess County

Police Pursuit

DAVIESS COUNTY, Ky. (WFIE, CNN) – A vehicle pursuit that began in southwestern Indiana ended in Kentucky on Monday.

Police say officers attempted to make a traffic stop in Chandler, a town north of Evansville.

That’s where officers confronted the suspect and eventually fired shots. The suspect then stole a police cruiser.

Brian Richardson, a witness, says, “We heard sirens and then they headed down towards Evansville and then we heard tires screeching and the sirens come back, and then we see a silver car go across the road.”

Richardson was on his way into work when chaos broke out and immediately took out his phone to start recording.

Video shows the suspect, Nina Devillez, pulled over by a Chandler police officer attempting to run when he pulls what appears to be a sword from the car.

Sgt. Todd Ringle with the Indiana State Police says, “At that point a Chandler police officer fired his weapon multiple times. We know that the suspect was at least shot one time.”

Richardson says the suspect then went around and got in the cop car before fleeing. A high speed chase began for the missing car and suspect.

Negotiations began over police radio between law enforcement and Devillez.

Ringle says, “Finally, a Rockport city police officer observed the vehicle on 2-31. He initiated a traffic stop but unfortunately that driver was not going to stop.”

Over 30 miles, three counties and across state lines from the first incident, Devillez crashed into a field in Daviess County.

Ringle says the driver got out of the vehicle and started to run. He says Rockport city police continued the pursuit on foot, and during that confrontation, a taser was deployed on the suspect, who was taken into custody.

Numerous agencies worked together to resolve the situation.

Daviess County sheriff Brad Youngman says, “It’s not that unusual for things to come across the bridges. They’re not always this high profile. There’s still a lot of questions that need to be answered as far as what led to all of this, but for now I just want to share with the public that there is no danger, the suspect is in custody.”

Court records show an attempted murder was case ongoing against Devillez in Lawrence County, Indiana. Last November, he was charged with seven felonies.

He was out on bond at the time on Monday’s incident.
