Scholarship fund named after late student

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -A beloved toddler at the Renshaw Early Childhood Center passed away on Sunday, Dec. 15, and now, a scholarship fund has been set up in her honor.

Bobby Grace Brakefield, daughter of Hendrix and Logan Brakefield, passed away due to volvulus, or a twisted intestine. A lover of fun and learning, Bobby Grace meant the world to many people both young and old, showing leadership qualities and the ability to make friends fast at a very young age.  To honor her memory, some of Bobby Grace’s family established a scholarship fund for students who attend or would like to attend the Big Red School at the Renshaw Early Childhood Center.

The scholarship fund offers an opportunity for students to enjoy the same experiences Bobby Grace had at the Big Red School.

“Their rationale was Bobby had such a fun time there. We want other children not to ever miss that opportunity because they can’t pay. And so this they established an endowment, the Bobby Grace Big Red School scholarship up so that it would last over time and that every semester one child would be the recipient of this so that they too could come and have the good times that Bobby had the good memories and make the good memories that Bobby,” said Beth Schaeffer, director of the Renshaw Early Childhood Center.

The Big Red School is well known for shaping some of the youngest minds in our community, getting them ready for education beyond pre-k. Some parents drive up to 90 minutes for their young children to attend the Big Red School. This new scholarship fund helps clear the way for a child and their family to afford the Big Red School, and create lasting relationships as Bobby Grace did with everyone there.
