Indiana girl dies after police pursuit

An Indiana girl was pronounced dead early Tuesday morning in Franklin following a short police pursuit.

A Simpson County Sheriff’s Office deputy clocked a car traveling at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour at about 2 a.m. Tuesday on Interstate 65 south. The deputy got behind the vehicle and ran the plate which came back to a car that had been reported stolen, Simpson County Sheriff Jere Dee Hopson said.

The deputy activated his lights and siren and the driver of the vehicle, Amos Lian, 18, of Clarkston, Ga., is accused of accelerating, Hopson said. Lian exited the interstate at Exit 2 where he lost control of the 2015 Chrysler 200, struck a utility pole and flipped the car several times.

The juvenile passenger was thrown from the car, and Simpson County Deputy Coroner Keven Gilbert, pronounced the girl dead at the scene, Hopson said. Her name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, Hopson said.

Lian was taken to TriStar Skyline Medical Center in Nashville where he was treated and then taken into custody by Metro Nashville Police on Kentucky warrants accusing him of first-degree manslaughter, first-degree wanton endangerment and identity theft, Hopson said.

Additional charges are possible pending grand jury presentation.
