FRANKFORT, Ky. – Transportation officials are asking Kentucky drivers to remain aware of forecasts and road conditions with a potential for snow on Friday.

KYTC says the National Weather Service is expecting several inches of snow across most of the Commonwealth that day, with higher amounts near the southern border.

While ice is not part of the forecast currently, officials say ongoing below-freezing temperatures combined with snow are likely to create hazardous driving conditions.

“Impacts are not expected to be as severe with this next storm, but our crews remain just as committed to their work to keep Kentuckians safe,” KYTC Secretary Jim Gray said. “The public staying home and off the roads greatly helped our storm response earlier this week. We ask you to remain cautious as extreme cold may make for slick roads currently as we prepare for the next winter storm.”

While officials say the impacts of the incoming snowstorm are not expected to be as severe, limiting travel is still encouraged.

If you must go out, they recommend being prepared, which includes an emergency car kit.

Emergency car kits suggested for drivers include the following:

  • First aid kit
  • Extra coat, gloves, and blankets or sleeping bag
  • Non-perishable food and water
  • Baby formula, diapers, wipes
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Portable phone chargers
  • Pet food, water, leash, bowl
  • Medications
  • Ice scraper and jumper cables
  • Shovel, and a bag of sand or litter

In addition, if traffic signals are not working, take the following steps:

  • Flashing yellow, proceed with caution
  • Flashing red, treat as a stop sign
  • No signal lights, treat as a 4-way stop

If you see a downed power line in the roadway, do not approach it or drive over it. Report the issue to your local power company. If the power line has fallen on your vehicle, officials recommend to stay inside and call 911. Always assume a downed power line is live and do not attempt to move them.
