How Bowling Green is countering the national labor shortage

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – All across America, businesses are running into a serious problem – there are more job openings than there are unemployed Americans.

Now, many people may think, “great, let’s get Americans into these jobs and fill these spots,” however, there are more underlying problems that could have a significant impact.

Many Americans may not be trained for specific roles, and as baby boomers retire, leadership positions open up, leaving gaps in key positions. While Bowling Green is the fastest growing city in the state, many businesses have felt pressures from these problems.

However, the Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce has been ahead of the game and has been working for nearly 10 years on this issue to best position Bowling Green businesses for success.

“What we need to do is have a better balance between education and workforce providers and the business community to make the labor market much more efficient you know, and fortunately for the chamber, we’ve actually been working on this issue for about a decade now,” said Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Ron Bunch.

A great focus has been placed on the children of south-central Kentucky, exposing them to a variety of career paths and exposing them to businesses in the community that could become potential employers. After being asked if Bowling Green is in a good spot for the next 10 years, Bunch said Bowling Green is in an excellent place for businesses to succeed.
