Warren County sheriff warns public of cryptocurrency scam

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Warren County Sheriff’s Office is warning the community of a cryptocurrency scam.

Warren County Sheriff Brett Hightower says scammers posing as “Deputy Bill Stephens with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office,” are contacting potential victims claiming they have missed court dates or jury duty. Scammers are now sending fraudulent legal documents to make it appear that these violations occurred.

Scammers will ask victims to retrieve money while on the phone, take the money to Kroger, and convert it to Bitcoin or Dogecoin to transfer.

The office says this is a scam. Warrants cannot be settled by paying the Warren County Sheriff’s Office. The office will not ask you to pay by gift cards, “Green Dot” prepaid debit cards, cryptocurrency, cash, check, or credit card numbers.

If you believe you are the victim or potential victim of scamming, please contact the Warren County Sheriff’s Office at 270.842.1633.
