Global cancer deaths among men projected to increase by 93% by 2050, study finds

(CNN) – Global cancer deaths among men are projected to surge in the next two decades.

Researchers from Australia analyzed cases and deaths of 30 types of cancer in 185 counties and territories in 2022 to make projections for 2050.

They forecast an 84% increase of cancer cases from 10 million in 2022 to 19 million in 2050.

Deaths are projected to rise from 5.4 million to 10.5 million during that same time period.

That’s a 93% increase.

Lung cancer is projected to stay the leading cause of cancer and cancer deaths in men.

The authors say cases of mesothelioma and deaths by prostate cancer will likely see the highest increases.

They urge stronger health infrastructure and better access are needed to improve cancer outcomes.
