WATCH: Grayson County sheriff’s deputy and citizen pull man from burning car

LEITCHFIELD, Ky. – A Grayson County sheriff’s deputy and citizen jumped in to save a man from a dangerous situation on Tuesday, authorities say.

In a release by the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies say they responded shortly before midnight May 21 for a car on fire at the intersection of Shrewsbury Road (KY 187) and Schoolhouse Road just outside of Leitchfield, Kentucky.

At the scene, authorities say deputy Thomas Lane ran to a vehicle nearly fully engulfed in flames, learning from citizens that someone was still inside.

Lane then reached into the vehicle, pulling the man out of the driver’s door and to safety while assisted by a Grayson County citizen, authorities say.

The sheriff’s office says no injuries were reported aside from some scrapes and scratches.

“With no regard for his own safety, deputy Lane acted courageously immediately upon his arrival at the scene. It appeared from the video that the man refused to exit the burning car when coaxed by the citizens. Minutes matter when our police respond to these types of calls. Had deputy Lane arrived or hesitated a couple of minutes later than what he did, the next car arriving on scene would probably have been the county coroner! We are truly blessed to have Thomas serving the community in which he was raised!” sheriff Norman Chaffins stated.

The collision is under investigation by the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office. The GCSO was assisted at the scene by the Leitchfield Police Dept., the Leitchfield Fire Dept., and the Grayson County EMS.
