Impeachment pressure grows
(NBC News) President Trump huddled with his cabinet Monday in the face of three controversies: The Syrian withdrawal, the location of the G-7 summit and lingering questions over a quid-pro-quo on Ukrainian aid…all as House Democrats step up their impeachment inquiry.
“Republicans have to get tougher and fight it,” Mr. Trump said of the House inquiry.
He’s currently facing backlash from both parties for abandoning Kurdish allies in northern Syria who helped the U.S. fight ISIS and are now begging American troops not to leave them to a violent Turkish assault.
“We never gave the Kurds a commitment we would stay 400 years to protect them,” the president said of his decision to remove U.S. troops from Syria.
He now says he’ll leave a small number of U.S. forces in the region, primarily to protect oil fields.
The president’s also on the defense after changing his mind about hosting the G-7 summit at his own resort in Miami.
He blamed the media and Democrats, but many Republicans were critical of what appeared to be a high-profile chance to profit off the presidency.
