Veterans Affairs: SOKY veterans groups
Multiple veterans groups have plans this weekend to celebrate local veterans, but all are not equally staffed.
In Barren County, Matt Mutter, the president of the Glasgow-Barren County Veterans Association, is preparing for multiple events, a dinner on Friday and a veterans day parade on Saturday. The group is small and is in need of more volunteers, especially younger veterans from the area, which the group wants to attract.
“We are really, really struggling right now to to get newer members to come in and volunteer, and I think a lot of organizations are struggling with that. And, you know, at this time, but we’re always looking for the younger veterans to come in because these are you know, these guys are not always going to be around,” Mutter said.
In Bowling Green, the American Legion Post 23 is preparing for their own celebrations. Commander Malcolm Cherry says the situation with volunteers in Warren County is different from Barren.
“All of our officers slots are full and stay for and we have yearly elections. And as far as volunteering to help do things, we have it down to just about a science,” Cherry said.
Post 23 is one of the most active Legion groups in the state, rivaled only by the post in Elizabethtown and has multiple events and a parade planned for the weekend.
Back in Barren County, Matt Mutter is just happy to honor the county’s veterans and to be able to do what he can.
“To us, age doesn’t matter if you’re 19 or 90. We’re going to try to help you whatever way we can,” Mutter said.
