Barren River Area Safe Space Group and WKU Counseling Center hold domestic violence awareness event
October is the official start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and several groups at Western Kentucky University joined together for a kickoff event for that cause today.
Members from the Barren River Area Safe Space Group and WKU Counseling Center teamed up to distribute information about domestic violence, give away free items to passing by students, and help start spreading the word about several of the events the group has planned for the entire month of October.
Some of those events range from panel discussions, team building activities, vigils, and much more.
Domestic violence and sexual assault have become very prevalent in today’s society – and especially on college campuses – which is why it’s become very important to raise awareness for this cause.
Ava McBride of the Barren River Area Safe Space Group says that domestic violence is "something that is being talked about more," but that "you can never talk about it enough."
McBride added that in the last year alone, B.R.A.S.S. has received more than 5,000 domestic violence related calls to their hot line just in this region alone.
