‘Massive efforts’ needed to reduce salt intake, according to WHO

KENTUCKY-The World Health Organization has just released a report saying that massive efforts are needed to reduce salt intake in order to save lives.

In 2013, all WHO countries set a goal of reducing sodium intake by 30%. Only 5% of the 194 countries have put policies in place to accomplish salt reduction. And none of the countries have reached this goal yet.

Too much salt can result in high blood pressure, strokes, heart attacks and kidney disease.

The American Heart Association recommends that adults consume no more than 2.5 grams of salt per day which is about one teaspoon.

“Salt is essential for daily body functions, however when consumed in excess amounts is definitely dangerous to health. Being cognizant of how much salt you consume every day can go a long way,” said T.J. Samson Resident Physician Evita Joseph, MD.

Ways to reduce salt include reading labels for low-sodium options, adding spices and herbs instead of salt to flavor food, and avoiding tin or canned foods.
