FRANKFORT, Ky. – Gov. Andy Beshear has declared a state of emergency ahead of expected dangerous weather.

According to the governor and National Weather Service, severe weather could include damaging winds with the possibility of flooding and tornadoes.

Winds could reach up to 55 to 70 mph, the governor says.

Beshear says at least 400 members of the National Guard are assembled and on standby.

The governor warned this will be a prolonged weather event and to remain cautious with a plan in place.

Kentucky Emergency Management director Jeremy Slinker advises to have an emergency kit including food, water, first aid kits, batteries and rain gear.

Beshear also is warning the public to avoid calling 911 for weather updates. If you see or suspect someone is stranded on a road during these events, contact KSP at 800-222-5555.

In addition, for confidential crisis counseling, you may call the Disaster Distress Helpline at 800-985-5990.
