WKU lifts Topper Transit mask mandate

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Western Kentucky University has announced that masks are no longer required inside Topper Transit vehicles.

This was the last place on the campus of WKU that still required a face covering.

The mask mandate was made optional on other places around campus at the end of February….but the mandate on the buses had still remained before this decision.

News 40 talked to students who were taking topper transit today and most seemed to be glad the mandate was lifted.

“Once we got mask mandates lifted from classes I thought it was gonna come pretty quickly for the buses too,” said one student.

“It’s amazing. Whenever I would get on the bus first it would be hard to breathe and now we can hear each other so I think it’s better without the mask,” said another student.

“I think it’s great just being able to see your buddies on the bus and talk to them without having to pull your mask back up. It’s nice and we’re more independent,” said a third student.

Officials at WKU say all decisions were made because they follow CDC guidelines.

“We’ve received federal funding to both build our building and update and maintain our parking fleet so because we have those federal dollars we’ve been required to follow those federal guidelines,” said Business Services Interim Assistant Vice President Jennifer Tougas.
