4,000 free trees to replace lost trees from tornadoes
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Over 2,000 trees were lost during the December tornados, but now the community is taking a big step to replace them.
The Warren County Conservation District gave away around 4,000 seedlings to the community Friday morning at Phil Moore Park.
Dozens of people impacted by the tornados came out to grab Flowering Dogwood, River Birch, White Pine and Red Shumard Oak seedlings.
Families could grab up to 20 seedlings and 5 of each variety. They do have this event every year, but said this year was more important than ever because of the tree loss from the storms.
“One lady I talked to said she lost several and that was the first thing she looked at when she went outside. Her house was damaged but she was really sad about the huge trees,” said Warren County Conservation District Chair of Supervisors Emily Sharp.
“We lost five trees in total, the most important one was our fifty year old pine tree. And our whole neighborhood lost a bunch of trees and looks completely different now, so this means a big deal to me,” said Carley Devore, who came to get seedlings.
All trees should be planted in well-drained soil and grow to be between 25 to 80 feet tall.
The Warren County Conservation District posted instructions on how to plant the trees on their Facebook page here.
