2 injured, 1 killed in crash at Interstate Drive intersection

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Bowling Green Police Department has confirmed one person is dead and two others are recovering from injuries following a crash Saturday night.

According to a collision report, police say they responded for an injury collision at the intersection of Interstate Drive and Corvette Drive around 9:54 p.m.

The report states a passenger told authorities the driver of a Chevrolet Impala, Sandra Cardwell, 60, of Bowling Green, was attempting to make a left turn from Corvette Drive onto Interstate Drive eastbound during a green light. Police say the passenger of the Impala further told them a pickup truck struck the driver’s side of the Impala.

Cardwell was extracted from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene by the Warren County Coroner’s Office, authorities say.

Police say two juveniles in the backseat of the Impala were transported by Medical Center EMS to The Medical Center at Bowling Green for treatment of injuries.

One juvenile was later released, while the other was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for potential internal injuries, according to police.

BGPD says the driver of the pickup truck told police he was “distracted by his cell phone” when he disregarded a traffic signal at the intersection. Police say he said the truck hit the driver’s side of the Impala. The minor’s cell phone was seized and logged into evidence, according to authorities.

Authorities say a witness confirmed the signal was green for the Impala when it attempted to turn left and said the truck hit the car’s driver’s side.

Police say surveillance has also shown a red traffic light for the pickup truck at the time it entered the intersection.

The investigation is ongoing pending collision reconstruction.
