2 dead after vehicle crashes into back of fire truck during emergency response

GEORGETOWN Ky. – Two people are dead following a crash involving a fire truck in Scott County over the weekend.
According to the Kentucky State Police, on Saturday, July 11 just after 3 p.m., troopers were requested to take lead of an investigation of a double-fatality collision involving a Scott County Fire Department vehicle and a passenger vehicle.
Authorities say a preliminary investigation indicated the Scott County Fire Department responded to an unrelated collision on the left shoulder of Interstate 75 south near the 142-mile marker. While providing traffic control on the left emergency shoulder, authorities say another vehicle traveling south on I-75 lost control, colliding with a parked Scott County Fire Department truck.
Troopers say the Scott County Fire Department vehicle had its emergency lights on and was occupied by firefighters.
Authorities say as a result, three Scott County firefighters were transported to Centerpoint Health Hospital in Georgetown, where they were treated for injuries and later released.
The passenger vehicle contained four people, two of which were taken to UK Hospital for serious injuries, authorities say.
Sixty-one-year-old Darren P. Nelson and 62-year-old Shauna C. Nelson, both of Knoxville, Tennessee, were pronounced dead at the scene by the Scott County coroner.
The collision remains under investigation.
The Kentucky State Police was assisted by Scott County EMS, Scott County Fire Department, Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Scott County Coroner’s Office and emergency management.
