World Health Organization warns of Superbug

GENEVA, Ch.- There’s a startling new forecast on the potential impact of the ongoing superbug crisis.

According to a new study published Monday in the medical journal ‘The Lancet,’ by the year 2025, the world could see nearly 40 million deaths due to infections that are resistant to the medications intended to treat them. The World Health Organization has called it a “Top Public Health Threat.”
Researchers say these superbugs are spawned by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics in humans, animals, and plants. Older adults are most at risk because they can be more susceptible to severe infection. The researchers found that between 1990 and 2021, deaths from drug-resistant infections among adults 70 and older jumped 80%.
They’re calling for improved access to quality care, more potent drugs, and other resources to help fight the growing superbug crisis.
