How Does These Artistic Layers Of Ice Form?

Have You Seen These Before? It’s a phenomenon known as ‘Frost Flowers’. They can appear during late autumn months. Jessica Cooper at Mammoth Cave National Park shared images from earlier this month. 

According to Shane Holinde, Outreach Manager at Kentucky Mesonet and Kentucky Climate Center, Frost Flowers can appear in a short window during the first hard freeze of the season, while the ground temperature is still relatively warm. 

Frost flowers are quite delicate, and can form under the right conditions. Temperatures must be 32°F or below, with a calm wind.
