WNKY News 40 Health Reports: Skin cancer risks

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, according to the American Cancer Society, and it can be deadly.

The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 14,000 people will die from skin cancer this year, and one of the main risk factors for developing skin cancer is sun exposure.

Dr. Shekar, a physician with the Medical Center at Bowling Green, says you can protect yourself from skin damage from the sun..

She suggests applying sun screen with a sun-protection factor, or SPF of 40 or higher and re-apply it every two to three hours if you’re in a swimming pool or sweat a lot. Also, Shekar recommends wearing clothing that covers your arms and a hat that covers your head and gives your face shade.

It’s a good idea to have an annual skin check, either with your healthcare provider or a dermatologist.

And between those skin checks, talk to your doctor if you notice:

  • A change in the color, size or shape of a mole.
  • A new bump or blemish that appears on your skin.
  • A sore that won’t heal.

And if you’re wondering if you need to wear sunscreen, Shekar has some simple advice: she says everyone needs to wear sunscreen regardless of your skin color since every one is at risk for skin cancer.
