WKU’s Munday Hall dedicated in honor of first Black undergraduate student

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-Earlier this morning, Western Kentucky University dedicated Munday Hall in honor of the first black undergraduate student.

Margaret E. Munday enrolled at WKU in 1956. She was also the first African American to graduate from WKU, graduating with a degree in music in 1960

A Munday Hall scholarship and the first two recipients were also announced at the ceremony this morning. The housing scholarship will provide funding for two students each year who reside in Munday Hall.

This is the first building on campus named after an African American.

“I am beyond words. And if I had the voices of a million angels they would not be able to express my gratitude at all that’s been done today,” said Munday.

“It became really clear to me that we needed to have a building on our campus named after an African American. We didn’t have one and that was a failing of our institution. Ms. Munday is a symbol for so many different reasons,” said WKU President Caboni.

Munday also had an esteemed teaching career- touching the lives of students for more than 30 years.
