WKU Volleyball: Cerino named CUSA Offensive Player of the Week

For the second-consecutive week, a WKU Volleyball student-athlete has been honored with Conference USA’s Offensive Player of the Week accolade as Sophia Cerino secured the title following a big weekend on The Hill. The weekly honor is the first of Cerino’s career.

As WKU Volleyball’s fourth weekend tournament went on, the junior pin hitter kept getting better and better. After a quiet .273 hitting clip with four kills, three blocks and two aces in WKU’s sweep of ETSU, the Brentwood, Tenn., turned on the jets. In Friday’s primetime matchup with No. 22 Washington State the lefty was lethal with 11 kills against just one error on 19 swings for a .526 clip in addition to four aces from behind the service line and a pair of blocks.

In the weekend finale, Cerino couldn’t be stopped. She registered a career-high 19 kills on 33 swings for a .485 attack percentage to secure herself Tournament MVP honors and help WKU Volleyball claim its second-straight tournament title. Collectively across the weekend, Cerino worked at a scorching .460 offensive hitting clip and registered a kill on 54-percent of her swings. She also added eight blocks and seven service aces across the trio of matches.

Cerino’s honor marks the third of the season for the Lady Toppers with all three coming across the last two weeks of distribution. Additionally, her Tournament MVP and All-Tournament Team recognitions were the first of her career as well.
