WKU Track & Field Opens 2021 Season at Vulcan Invite

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Track & Field is prepared to open its indoor season at the Vulcan Invite hosted by UAB in Birmingham, Ala. This will be the first meet for the Hilltoppers and Lady Toppers since the 2020 Conference USA Indoor Championships prior to the cancellation of spring sports and their outdoor season in early March.

“I can’t say enough about the support that WKU has given us, and the student-athletes, what they’ve been willing to sacrifice to come in and be ready to go,” said Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Brent Chumbley on the upcoming season. “I’m really happy with where we are.”

While the distance and mid-distance runners were able to compete in a fall cross country season, the remainder of the track & field squad patiently waited and trained during the offseason. The team arrived back on campus, after a four-week long break, just six weeks ahead of the 2021 Conference USA Indoor Championships.

“This year it was more of a gradual increase in training,” said sophomore Alexis Williams on the team’s preparation for the indoor season. “We’re still getting back into the flow of the hard training, but I still think we’re definitely ready for this meet this upcoming weekend.”

WKU will travel with approximately half of its full squad to UAB for its first meet of the indoor season. The Red and White is slated to compete at the Birmingham Crossplex on three different occasions before returning to the indoor facility one final time for the C-USA Championships.

This will be Chumbley’s second indoor season at WKU alongside assistant coaches Tosha Ansley and Brooks LeCompte. The staff has several returning student-athletes they expect to see strong performances from as the season progresses, in addition to some newcomer talent in a few Hilltopper freshmen.

The day will begin at 9 a.m. CT with shot put. Sprints and mid-distance events will begin at 10 a.m. and end at approximately 4:30 p.m. The women will precede the men in every running event. Jumping events will run through the late morning and into the afternoon along with throwing events.
