WKU Student Government Association partners with City of Bowling Green and BGPD to celebrate Constitution Day
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU’s Student Government Association, the City of Bowling Green and the Bowling Green Police Department hosted a celebration on campus Wednesday afternoon to commemorate Constitution Day.
“We’re just out here spreading awareness about the elections opening up, and it just happens to be on Constitution Day… and we’re out here celebrating that with the City of Bowling Green,” Chief Communications Officer Preston Jenkins of WKU SGA says.
The goal is to raise awareness about the importance of both voting and the Constitution… and it’s fitting that there’s an election on Constitution Day as well, as they’re encouraging students to get out and vote during SGA election season.
“One of the City of Bowling Green interns is actually a senator for WKU Student Government… and he talked about how they wanted to put together a Constitution Day event on campus and asked if the city may be interested in supporting it in some way… and we said absolutely, yes. So this afternoon, we held a proclamation at City Hall, officially declaring today as Constitution Day in Bowling Green and Warren County… and we’re here just to tell more students about the kind of opportunities the City of Bowling Green offers for not just government services, but also employment and internship opportunities and just ways to better connect the students to our city and local government,” Downtown Development Coordinator Telia Butler with the City of Bowling Green says.
The afternoon started with a presentation from Dr. Keith Gaddie, a professor of political science at Texas Christian University, on the Voting Rights Act as we approach the 60th anniversary. At Centennial Mall, SGA’s goal with this partnership is answering one main question:
“What would actually get students to travel to downtown and spend money and time downtown? I think it’s great to get the student input of actually what the students might want from downtown. So I think that’s another goal in this partnership,” Jenkins says.
Downtown BGKY couldn’t agree more, as they hope to capitalize on this relationship and show students the benefits of coming down the other side of the Hill.
“Downtown is just right down the street and it is so close. We love our students and campus is their home, but the top of campus has a beautiful view straight down College Street of downtown, and we want them to know they’re always welcome. We have free and affordable events and programs hosted throughout the year for them to spend their time, especially on weekends… and we have some really great affordable downtown local shops and retailers and businesses that would love to see the patronage of students or employ them part time if they’re looking for work,” Butler says.
