WKU Softball closes out tournament slate with win over Golden Eagles
Bowling Green, Ky. – WKU Softball finished the Hilltopper Spring Fling with a win on Sunday, collecting six runs on nine hits to defeat Tennessee Tech, 6-1.
Sophomore designated hitter Maci Masters led the Hilltoppers (13-6 overall) in extra-base hits with two doubles while senior catcher
Randi Drinnon led in scoring with two RBI. In the circle, sophomore right-hander Rylan Smith collected nine strikeouts to earn her fifth win of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
WKU 6, TTU 1
WKU jumped ahead early in the game with three runs in the bottom of the first.
Freshman infielder Katie Murphy opened the inning reaching on an error and moved over to third after a bunt single from sophomore infielder Morgan Sharpe.
A sacrifice fly from freshman outfielder Kennedy Stinson scored Murphy for the first run of the day.
Sophomore infielder Annie White reached on a walk, and after some defensive confusion, Sharpe managed to steal home for the second run.
The third run of the day was courtesy of freshman outfielder Macy Gregor who sent the ball to centerfield for a sacrifice fly.
Tennessee Tech (6-11 overall) scored their first run in the third, but the Hilltoppers posted another three runs in the fifth.
Masters posted her sixth double of the season to score Stinson who reached earlier with a single to third.
Continuing WKU’s offensive efforts, Drinnon hit a two-RBI double to right center to score Masters and Kemp who was pinch running for Gregor.
Smith threw five full innings for the Tops, finishing her outing with nine strikeouts and only giving up three hits. Freshman right-hander
Erica Houge took over for Smith in the sixth and shut the Golden Eagles down to end the game.
