WKU set to kick off 2025 indoor campaign at Rod McCravy Invitational

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Track and Field will kick off the 2025 indoor season with the Rod McCravy Memorial Invitational Friday and Saturday January 10-11. The meet will be held at the Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center in Louisville, Ky. and hosted by Kentucky.

  • ABOUT THE TOPS
    The Hilltoppers look to build off a strong 2024 indoor campaign that saw an individual conference champion and several medal finishers.
  • High jump standout Nick Fornoff is back for WKU looking to build on a successful first season at WKU highlighted by a third place finish in the event in last season’s conference championship meet.
  • Kameron Horton looks to continue to make his mark following a stellar freshman campaign. The native of Louisville claimed a fifth place finish in the 60 at the CUSA Indoor Championships last season. His outdoor campaign culminated at the NCAA East Regionals in Lexington.
  • Another returner that made it to Lexington last outdoor season is Ajla Basic. Basic will compete for the Tops in the weight throw during the indoor season. Last year she took home fifth in the weight throw at the CUSA Championships. WKU added another thrower in standout USC-Upstate transfer Jayla Gilbert who will compete for WKU this weekend.
  • Kaison Barton will also make his return for the Hilltoppers. Last indoor season Barton set a season best in the weight throw at the CUSA Championships, tossing 18.57 meters.
  • Multi-athlete Rachel Payne looks to start a successful senior campaign. The native of Maysville, Ky. will compete in the 200 meter dash and the high jump this weekend.
  • Mary Dye will compete in the distance ranks following a successful cross country season which led her all the way to NCAA Regionals after she managed third-team All-CUSA honors.

On the first meet of the 2025 season, assistant coach Jeff Henderson said “The Rod McCravy Memorial Invitational is a special opportunity for our team to showcase the hard work they’ve put in throughout the season. Each athlete has been grinding day in and day out, and this meet allows us to compete against some of the best, which is exactly what we need as we prepare for conference championships and nationals.”

“We’re proud of the dedication our athletes have shown, and we’re excited to see them rise to the challenge this weekend,” Henderson added.

  • MEET HISTORY
    This season’s invitational marks the 30th annual Rod McCravy Memorial Invitational. Rod McCravy was a standout track athlete at Kentucky who tragically passed away in 1987. The native Kentuckian won multiple KHSAA State Championships in the 400-hurdles.
  • Last season host Kentucky and Texas saw multiple athletes win various events. However, in the 4×400 meter relays the Longhorns swept both the men’s and women’s events.

EVENT BREAKDOWN

  • Action Friday will get underway at 11 a.m. with the women’s high jump. The day will conclude with the men’s distance medley slated for 6 p.m.
  • Saturday, the women’s shot put will kick off day two action at 10 a.m. The meet will conclude with the men’s and women’s 4×400 meter relays at 2:40 p.m.

SCOUTING THE FIELD

  • With the meet being hosted by SEC power Kentucky multiple high level programs will be competing against WKU this weekend.
  • Some competing against the Tops include in-state foe Louisville, Cincinnati, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Purdue, and UCF.
  • WKU isn’t the only team from Conference USA to compete in the meet as rival Louisiana Tech will also be lining up against the Hilltoppers in this weekend’s meet.
