WKU PD to purchase updated body armor, pistols with grant

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – This fall, Western Kentucky University will be better protected after the campus police department received more than $48,000 to upgrade weapons and equipment.

The WKU Police Department says they applied for two grants through the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security, which would allow the purchase of new, updated equipment.

“We received a letter that we are recipients of the grants, both totaling $24,000 a piece” WKU chief of police Mitch Walker says. “And so we’ll use those funds to replace aging body armor and service pistols for our police officers.”

Walker says that equipping officers with new service weapons and armored vests is necessary to ensure a safe campus for students, faculty and staff.
