WKU hosts 100 Miles of Hope blood drive to benefit American Red Cross

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – It’s a yearly blood drive that’s not just a friendly competition between rival schools, but one that helps those who need it most: the 100 Miles of Hope blood drive.

It runs through Wednesday, with the winner announced during the 100 Miles of Hate football game between the Hilltoppers and Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders on November 15th.

One WKU professor who helps organize the event says every two minutes, someone in America needs blood, a reminder of just how important this drive is.

She also shared why she chooses to volunteer her time each year.

“I’m in public health, so obviously that’s got something to do with wanting to be here and wanting to volunteer… and I even give blood, and I like to lead by example. So if I’m giving blood, I’m going to want everybody else to come give blood. But I think more so I’m an alumnus of Western. I’m an employee here now… and so of course the competition means a lot… and also I get to help lives in the process, which is always fun,” Angel Shoemake, a pedagogical assistant professor, says.

The drive is open from noon to 6PM each day at the Preston Center on WKU’s campus.
