WKU Graduate shares her story of surviving breast cancer
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and one young survivor is using her voice to raise awareness and advocate for early detection.
Moira Gray, a Western Kentucky University graduate, was just 25 years old when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“I didn’t have any family history, so it definitely wasn’t something I thought I’d go through,” Gray said.
She had no symptoms, but her annual OB-GYN exam revealed a lump—catching the cancer at stage one before it spread. Gray underwent two surgeries and six months of chemotherapy, describing the experience as a long and difficult journey.
“The whole thing felt like forever,” Gray said. “It was over a year from start to finish.”
Now in remission, Gray works in oncology, turning her personal battle into a mission to help others. She said early detection saved her life and stresses the importance of regular screenings, even for younger women.
“Cancer doesn’t care how old you are,” she said. “You have to prioritize your health.”
Gray hopes her story inspires others to be proactive and never ignore potential warning signs.
