WKU Football’s Upton Stout Drafted by the San Francisco 49ers

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The top Hilltopper in this year’s NFL Draft pool has been taken off the board, as the NFL announced the San Francisco 49ers selected cornerback Upton Stout with the 100th pick in round three.

Stout now heads to San Francisco to play under head coach Kyle Shanahan after three seasons in Bowling Green playing under head coach Tyson Helton.

In his 2024 season, the corner racked up 53 total tackles, an interception and a sack, which led to Stout being placed on the All-Conference USA First Team Defense.

The past few months saw Stout participate in prestigious NFL prospect events, including the Reese’s Senior Bowl and the NFL Combine, and he also saw limited reps during the pro day held on the Hill (which followed the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine).

Stout saw success in each event leading up to the draft, even being named the Reese’s Senior Bowl American Team Defensive Back of the Week amongst a large pool of the best players from across the nation.

Looking back on his time with the Tops, Stout hit the field in 33 games, tallying 125 total tackles (77 solo), 9.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 6 interceptions, and a forced and recovered fumble.

With his selection in round three and pick 100, Stout joins the top-10 for highest drafted Hilltoppers all-time:

  1. Forrest Lamp – 2017 (Pick 38, Cleveland Browns)
  2. Malachi Corley – 2024 (Pick 65, New York Jets)
  3. Taywan Taylor – 2017 (Pick 72, Tennessee Titans)
  4. Joseph Jefferson – 2002 (Pick 74, Indianapolis Colts)
  5. DeAngelo Malone – 2022 (Pick 82, Atlanta Falcons)
  6. Virgil Livers – 1975 (Pick 83, Chicago Bears)

  9. Upton Stout – 2025 (Pick 100, San Fransisco 49ers)
  10.  Tyler Higbee – 2016 (Pick 110, Los Angeles Rams)

Stout is just the second player drafted by the 49ers, joining former Hilltopper Prince Charles Iworah.
