WKU Football works ahead of next week’s Red & White Spring Showcase

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Western Kentucky University has many sports in the midst of their spring seasons at the moment, but one group is preparing for their final showing of the spring.

The Hilltopper football team has been working over the past month on the turf of Feix Field, getting stronger as a whole with many new players wearing red.

Although some guys have yet to play under head coach Tyson Helton in the past, those who have are making sure the program’s goals are clear come the fall.

“ Just showing the guys that this is a place to win,” said defensive back Kent Robinson. “You know, Western is always going to be a team in Conference USA that’s going to compete, so I just want to make sure the new players keep that mentality, that standard that we’re trying to get back to that conference championship and win it this year.”

“Just winning, you know Western Kentucky is a team that wins,” new Hilltopper running back La’Vell Wright said. “They’re always in the conference championship, so just bringing home that title is something that Coach Helton prides himself on and something that I want to do as well.”

The winning standard under Helton has been very apparent, with the team holding a 48-32 record through his first six seasons in Bowling Green, including a pair of trips to the Conference USA title game.

One of the team’s more experienced receivers, Moussa Barry, is ready to lead this group back to the top of the league and is motivated by the fact that many of the new guys will be looking up to him.

“ I mean, it is definitely motivating, but with me, I feel like the best way to lead by example is what you do on the field,” Barry said. “All that vocal stuff really is cool, but you have to go out there and make plays… If I go out there and make the plays, be consistent every day, you know, that’s really it.”
