WKU Football: Tops not overlooking MTSU despite Blue Raiders’ road struggles

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU’s football team will host rival MTSU in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Houchens Industries–L. T. Smith Stadium.

The Hilltoppers (7-4, 5-2) have been the surprise of the year so far in Conference USA and can achieve their first 8-win regular season since 2016 with a win vs the Blue Raiders.

For MTSU (4-7, 3-4), the 2019 campaign has been full of disappointment. The Blue Raiders have played well at home, but are winless in their five contests away from Johnny “Red” Floyd Stadium. Furthermore, MTSU has lost those road matchups by an average of 19.2 points per game.

Even with MTSU’s struggles away from home, WKU Head Coach Tyson Helton and Offensive Coordinator Bryan Ellis aren’t overlooking their opponent and know the Hilltoppers will have to be at their best to get a win on Saturday.

“We will get their best game and we have to match that intensity,” Helton said. “Our guys are very excited for it to be the last game of the season at home vs a conference rival.”

Ellis echoed his head coach’s message, “It will be a four-quarter game… We will have to play our best in order to win the football game.”

WKU has rebounded with two straight road wins at Arkansas and at Southern Miss after dropping back-to-back conference games vs Marshall and Florida Atlantic.

Saturday’s game will be the 69th all-time meeting between the two schools, which are separated by less than 100 miles. The Blue Raiders hold a 35-32-1 advantage vs the Hilltoppers.
