WKU FB’s Malone Tabbed as Group of 5’s Best
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – When the Hilltoppers officially return to the gridiron this fall, they’ll do so with a player who’s receiving some much-deserved recognition as one of the nation’s top defensive starters.
Tops defensive end DeAngelo Malone was recently named the Group of 5’s top defensive lineman by Rivals’ lead college football analyst Mike Ferrell.
The “Group of 5” refers to the five conferences that are not considered “Power 5” conferences in the NCAA Division I FBS. This group includes the American Athletic Conference (AAC), Conference USA (C-USA), Mid-American Conference (MAC), Mountain West Conference (MW) and Sun Belt Conference (Sun Belt).
To those who have watched Malone, the high praise is not surprising.
The Atlanta-native is coming off a stellar Junior campaign in which he was named the Conference USA’s Defensive Player of the Year thanks to a gaudy stat line that included 11.5 sacks and 21 tackles for loss.
Malone’s decision to return for his Senior year on The Hill was a huge boost to a Hilltoppers team that returns 16 of its 22 starters from a year ago.
WKU will kick off the 2020 season on Thursday, September 3rd at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium against UT Chattanooga.
