WKU celebrates second annual Day of Giving
BOWLING GREEN, ky – Current and Former Hilltoppers everywhere are showing their pride today as Western Kentucky University hosts its second annual Day of Giving—a 24-hour initiative dedicated to supporting students, scholarships and academic programs.
The event encourages alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends of WKU to give back in meaningful ways. Whether through scholarships, department funding or campus programs, every donation helps shape the future of WKU students.
Elizabeth Medley, assistant director of philanthropy and alumni engagement, emphasizes the importance of this day and its initiative.
“[It’s a way] to shine a light on the importance of philanthropy, scholarships, and funding for our departments,” Medley said. “Every money that goes into the university is going into the students here on the Hill, and we just want to best prep them for life outside of college and have the best experience here.”
Contributions can be designated to specific departments, student programs or broader initiatives like the new buildings such as Gordon Ford College of Business building and the Athletic Fieldhouse. Medley, a WKU alum herself, understands firsthand the impact of these donations.
“I am a living example of someone who relied on scholarships and able to attend a post-secondary educational institution,” she said. “Without scholarships from WKU, I don’t know if I would have been able to attend college. ”
Beyond financial contributions, the Day of Giving is also about celebrating the community and Alumni’s WKU pride. Participants are encouraged to wear red, share their Hilltopper stories on social media, and tag @WKUAlumni.
“[It’s important to] remember how you got to where you are and if you’re able to make an impact in another student’s life, that would help them get to where you are in your profession.,” Medley said. “It’s a great way to give back and make a difference for the next generation.”
The campaign started at midnight Tuesday morning and goes to midnight Tuesday night, but donations are accepted year-round. To learn more or to contribute, visit wku.edu/dayofgiving.
