BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Western Kentucky University kicked off a week of celebrations with its Military Awareness and Appreciation Day on Monday.

The Military Student Services, Student Veteran Alliance and ROTC Members celebrated with food, drinks, gifts and booths at the Academic Complex.

The event is held each year to get the word out about resources that exists for students who are veterans or active military.

The university has over 1,500 students with connections to the military.

“I feel like the military population, by itself, is a diverse population,” said Kent Johnson of WKU Military Student Services. “They come from all walks of life, but also they have unique experiences that they’ve had. A lot of them have been overseas. They’ve got a lot of unique challenges that they face also, as far as returning, transitioning to civilian life.”

Today’s events were the start of the university’s diversity, equity and inclusion week, which includes more fun events all week long.
