WKU Basketball: Hilltoppers, Lady Toppers open 2019-2020 season at Hilltopper Hysteria
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Basketball officially returned to The Hill on Thursday night as WKU hosted its annual tip-off event, Hilltopper Hysteria, at E.A. Diddle Arena.
The Hilltopper and Lady Topper Basketball programs were on display for two hours on a night that featured player and coach introductions, scrimmages by both teams and an autograph session to end the festivities.
Hilltop Club is an associate sponsor of Hilltopper Hysteria, while Med Center Health is the presenting sponsor of the 2019-20 Hilltopper Basketball season.
In a change from previous years, the men’s team competed in an extended scrimmage at Hysteria with two 12-minute halves.
Sophomore center Charles Bassey led all scorers with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while graduate transfer guard Camron Justice poured in 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range.
Redshirt senior guard/forward Jared Savage and redshirt junior forward Carson Williams each had 16 points, and junior guard Taveion Hollingsworth finished with 14 points.
Junior guard Josh Anderson and freshman guard Jordan Rawls scored 11 points apiece, while Rawls also handed out four assists. Senior guard Kenny Cooper tallied 10 points and seven assists.
In the women’s scrimmage, the black squad came away with the win against the red team with a final score of 17-12.
Dee Givens scorched in the brief scrimmage, shooting 3-of-3 from beyond the arc for nine points. Raneem Elgedawy added six points for the red team with a rebound. Sherry Porter had five points in the contest and newcomer Fatou Pouye had four. Whitney Creech had four assists by the end of the scrimmage along with two rebounds. Transfer Bree Glover had two blocks and three rebounds in 12 minutes.
The Hilltoppers will host Kentucky State in their first exhibition at 7:30 p.m. CT Nov. 2 inside Diddle Arena before welcoming Tennessee Tech in the regular-season opener at 7 p.m. Nov. 5.
The Lady Toppers will host Kentucky Wesleyan on Halloween for exhibition game at E.A. Diddle Arena before opening the 2019-20 season at Louisville on Nov. 5. WKU’s home opener will be Wednesday, Nov. 13 against Belmont at 6 p.m.
