Wheelchair Basketball Tournament being held at Kummer-Little Rec Center this weekend

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. –  For the first time, the Bowling Green Parks and Rec will host an adaptive sports tournament over the weekend.

On Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. , the Bowling Green Invitational Wheelchair Basketball Tournament will be held at Kummer-Little Rec Center in downtown Bowling Green.

Admission to the event is free.

The tournament will feature teams from Louisville, Cincinnati, and Alabama, as well as an at-large team and two junior teams.

Organizers of the event are calling this tournament a “preview” of things to come. They’re planning on hosting another tournament in September, with the goal of making it an annual event every fall.

A unique tournament like this gives the community a chance to come watch gifted athletes in a sport that many people have never watched before.

“It’s elite level athletes,” said Cameron Levis, Special Populations Instructor for Bowling Green Parks and Rec. “These guys are traveling the country competing in tournaments, competing for their right to championships like every other athlete wants to compete for. To watch these teams, these athletes are really incredible and it really just puts things into perspective. You’re seeing past that disability.”

If you’d like to try out wheelchair basketball yourself, it’s offered every Monday night from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Kummer-Little Rec Center, and is free and open to the public.
