What to know about measles cases

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – As measles continues to spread throughout our nation, it is important to stay up-to-date.

Over 700 measles cases have been confirmed across 25 states, including Tennessee, Indiana and Kentucky. This highly contagious virus can appear within seven to 14 days after contact with the sickness.

Experts say that common symptoms of measles include high fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes and rashes. The CDC reports measles was officially declared “eliminated” in 2000. However, it is still prominent in parts of the world.

Children, cancer patients and pregnant women are at higher risk. One local doctor with Med Center Health gives perspective on the spread of measles.

Dr. Suman Shekar reveals that the disease can be “alive in the air,” like droplets on surfaces, for “up to two hours.” She urges people to wash their hands and regularly clean your spaces.

The measles-mumps-rubella vaccine has played a big role in helping measles. The CDC says the vast majority of the measles cases are from those who are unvaccinated or have unknown vaccination status.

Dr. Shekar says “the most important thing” is “staying away from others if you are sick. She encourages others to educate themselves before taking any additional steps.
