What is dry January? Benefits of having mocktails for a month

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-2023 might be looking a little drier so far for some people…

“Dry January is pretty much you’re abstaining from any alcoholic beverages in the month of January,” said Norton Healthcare Primary Care Physician Dr. Steven Patton.

Dry January has become a popular health trend over the last decade.

And, it has a lot of benefits.

“It gives you a chance to step back and see are you drinking too much you can also think of some of the health benefits for it or it gives you a chance to kind of reset think about the patterns of drinking, talk to friends about it, with everyone doing it during the same month it gives you a support group too!” said Dr. Patton.

You may notice significant changes in your appearance and overall health.

“Gonna help decrease your blood pressure, gonna help decrease risk for diabetes, help get you good quality sleep, especially those who do night caps. It will help with skin, stomach, liver,” said Dr. Patton.

Non-alcoholic options are becoming more readily available at local bars too.

“I think it’s nice for families to be able to come in and mom and dad enjoy a beer together, and one of those is non-alcoholic,” said Gasper Brewing owner Isaiah King.

Gasper Brewing offers non-alcoholic beers, and staff are also having conversations about offering mocktails in the future.

“We’ve got some great collections from Brooklyn Brewing Company, an amber, a lager and a couple IPAs, something to check all the boxes,” said King.
