BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Western Kentucky University is mourning the loss of one of its professors.

According to WKU’s Department of History, Dr. Juan Romero died last weekend.

The department says Romero had to take medical leave during the spring semester.

WKU’s website says Romero taught a Middle East survey course, along with multiple other courses, such as Arab-Israeli conflict, history of Iran and more.

Romero was also working on a book project analyzing “the relations between the U.S. Marines and Lebanese militias and peace efforts undertaken by Lebanese religious leaders,” the website says.

University officials say Romero talked about how he looked forward to returning to his students and research and planned to retire at the end of June.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife, Rita, his family and friends,” the department stated. “We will keep everyone informed regarding ways to remember and celebrate Dr. Romero’s life.”
