Weapons found following lowered water levels in Edmonson County
EDMONSON COUNTY, Ky. – The dry weather and the removal of Lock and Dam No. 5 has lowered the level of the Green River.
Some strange things have appeared in the mud and lower waters, including one mystery.
Some people fishing on the Green River at the mouth of Bear Creek found four guns and turned them into the Edmonson County Sheriff’s Department.
The two assault-style rifles, a shotgun and a semi-automatic handgun seemed to have been submerged for years.
The rifles did not have clips with them, but the pistol did. The rust made it impossible, though, to see if it was loaded with ammunition or not.
Were they stolen? Had they been used in a crime? The sheriff’s department will try to recover the serial numbers to answer those questions.
Edmonson County deputy sheriff Truman Waddell says, “The nature of the rust and decay on the weapons due to the length of time that they’ve been in the river, they could possibly been there up to two years. It could be very difficult or impossible to find the serial numbers.”
Edmonson County Sheriff James Vincent also told News 40 that he wants to clear the river of the cars that have appeared in the low waters, as many as 10 along the Green River.
He asked the Army Corps of Engineers for help, but he said their answer was it wasn’t their responsibility, and he would need a permit from the corps to even do that himself.
News 40 will bring you any developments, with the guns or the cars, as they develop.
