Warren County tap drinkers concerned over water changes – BGMU comments
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Some people in Warren County who drink their water straight from the tap have complained about an earthy taste, smell and even color change.
Bowling Green Municipal Utilities marketing coordinator Shelley Lowe said this yearly problem is especially worse in the fall.
She said this time of year as the water turns over in the Barren River reservoir, tree limbs and organic matter stir up due to the temperatures changing.
BGMU also said when U.S. Army Corp of Engineers lowers the lake, everything gets stirred up together at the bottom of that lake and enters the river that heads to the treatment plant.
Lowe said the water is still 100 percent safe to drink, passing their 1.3 million water checks per year.
Luckily, Lowe said these water changes might not stick around for much longer.
“Our water treatment plant is undergoing a renovation that should be done sometime next year. Hopefully in the future, this won’t be an issue, will have the equipment necessary to combat the taste of that water during the fall and the spring when the weather changes.”
