Warren County School District to get a new school resource officer supervisor

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- School resource officers link the world of law enforcement with education.

Come Summer of 2020, the Warren County school resource officers will have a new supervisor.

“When the schools approached us and talked to us about this, we thought it would just be a great opportunity to have someone at the district office who would be right there,” said Warren County Sheriff Brett Hightower.

Currently, the school district’s Director of School Safety oversees the school resource officers. Since he’ll be retiring, this new supervisor will be employed by the sheriff’s office while working at the school’s central office on Lovers Lane. The goal is to have the supervisor be able to quickly report to both the sheriff’s office and the school.

“This will just further enhance our capabilities to communicate effectively with all the different issues and things going on great within the school system,” Hightower said.

The role of a school resource officer is to provide a listening ear for students as they need one, but also to keep them safe.

“They’ll come down and be able to work with different schools and our school principals and helping them develop and looking at their plans for each of the individual schools,” Hightower said.

“It’s another method of getting the sheriff’s office and the Warren County School District linked even closer, and for one common goal, for the safety and well being of the students.

“It helps us to oversee and manage some of those different school resource officer positions a little bit closer. I think this is going to be a wonderful opportunity to further enhance what a great relationship we already have,” Hightower said.

The SRO supervisor will officially begin the position on July 1, 2020.
