Warren County Public Schools addresses Amendment 2

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Warren County Public Schools held a conference Tuesday addressing the proposed Amendment 2, which would allow tax dollars to go towards private and charter schools.

WCPS says they are against this new amendment, saying it would devastate public schools.

Superintendent Rob Clayton says he’s seen a trend like this across the country, and he does not want it to happen to schools here in Kentucky.

Pauletha Butts, the principal at Alvaton Elementary, gave her view point on the amendment, as well as a teacher at Oakland Elementary, who we were able to speak to.

She told us she’s seen a diverse group of students in her classroom, and she wants them all to feel equal.

“I have students who are lucky because they’re in our country… and so I want those students to have the exact same opportunities that everybody else gets… and so I want to be able to provide everything that I can for those students… and if you start taking money away from us, it’s going to make it more of a struggle for us to be able to do that for our students,” Brooke Vincent says.

We reached out to Kentucky Students First, a group that is in favor of Amendment 2. They say it’s an update to the Kentucky Constitution that will “protect our local students and allow for more educational opportunities for all students.”

Superintendent Clayton, however, says funding like this could go towards helping students in need, and focusing on aspects like mental health, which he believes is an important part of their lives.

News 40 will continue to follow this amendment and keep you updated with any new details.
